“The bus turned the bend, and there it was: the place, where it had all happened.
It hadn’t changed at all: same buildings with shuttered windows ringed the small square. A few old men sitting, smoking, under the trees, which looked like they had stooped in heat, with weary resignation. Sky was the same unapologetic blue, and as she turned her head, the restaurant and its gaudy red door were also unchanged. It was afternoon, so the streets were mostly deserted, and no one was waiting at the bus stop.
She got off, and stood, clutching her unwieldy bag tightly to her chest and taking deep, steady breaths. The air smelled stale—just like she remembered it. Within minutes, she was feeling the fabric of her dress clinging to her damp back, and longed for a cool, dark place to take shelter. The sun felt merciless, beating down on the uneven pavement.
“I am back,” she said silently into the void of the street.
“I am back, and I’ll make you pay for everything.”
